ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- A 12-story, fanciful palace, created from 4 million pounds of ice, is being constructed on an island east of downtown St. Paul. The palace will be the focal point of the St. Paul Winter Carnival Centennial celebration Jan. 22 to Feb. 9.

The Ice Palace had been scheduled to open to the public on Jan. 22, the first day of the Winter Carnival. However, abnormal daytime temperatures, which have regularly soared above 35 degrees Fahrenheit, have slowed construction. It is now expected to be complete on Jan. 31.
