Classic Revival
It was a clean-cut situation: Everything would have to go and the space be gutted (with pragmatic exception made for the formidable floor-to-ceiling silver safe, now concealed behind new cabinet doors) in the evaluation of architect Dan Phipps when he was commissioned to redo the original kitchen of a San Francisco mansion built in 1915.
A specialist in building renovation, Phipps here produced a classically delineated solution in which all the kitchen components are integrated in a format organizing traffic flow as well as culinary procedures through a 35-by 14-ft. space.
