HOUSTON, March 3 /PRNeswire/ -- Surgeons at the Texas Heart Institute/St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital successfully exchanged the heart assist device implanted in a 47-year-old man on Jan. 19, for a human one on March 1.
The transplantation team was led by Dr. Bud Frazier and Dr. Denton A. Cooley. The procedure, which included the removal of the assist device; time on the heart lung machine in an attempt to maintain blood pressure, and the use of the heterotopic (piggyback) procedure in the operation, which lasted nine hours. The patient is in critical but stable condition.
