The power of freedom in the Philippines
On his last visit to the United States, Ferdinand Marcos sat down for an interview and refused all offers of refreshments. Instead, an aide produced a glass, a thermos and a small silver dish. The aide poured water into the glass, took a drink, then covered the glass with the silver dish. When Marcos himself drank from the glass, he carefully replaced the dish on top of it.
Only later did I realize that the aide was a tester, and that the silver dish covered the glass so that no one could slip anything into the water. The President of the Philippines was afraid of being poisoned--and by his closest aides.
