Clinique flexes muscles in Japan
TOKYO (FNS) -- Clinique continues to have a startling impact on the way Japanese department stores do business.
The treatment line, a division of Estee Lauder, which has been on the market here for seven years and is now sold in 66 upscale department stores, started a revolution in cosmetics retailing shortly after its launch in 1979.
Until about 1980, the typical cosmetics department of a japanese department store was the picture of perfect harmony: Identical counters conservatively styled to the store's taste, each counter with an unobtrusive signpost or reading lamp identifying the name of the brand.
