The History of The Nation According to the F.B.I.
The history of The Nation as seen by the Federal Bureau of Investigation appears to have begun when Oswald Garrison Villard purchased the magazine, in July 1918. The F.B.I. had been keeping a watchful eye on Villard, according to its records, from as early as 1915, when he was seeking a Mexican Peace Commission to head off U.S. military intervention south of the border. The F.B.I. files on Villard record that he also opposed U.S. entry into World War I and was known to consort with anti-British and pro-Irish elements.
