UNCHAINED MELODY: The little local guys in greater Boston are buzzing about the shadow of another giant in their midst.
In addition to a half dozen chains boasting a dozen or more weeklies each, area publishers say a new chain is now on the scene led by the venture capital division of giant Fidelity Investments. While Fidelity insists it is simply one of several private investors in the papers, beset competitors are moaning about conspiracy - or at least another deep-pocketed threat in an economically ravaged region.
