Listening to our consumers, it seems clear that department stores are down but certainly not out. It's possible to live and shop without going anywhere near one. It's possible that department stores are where prices are out of whack the most. But only twenty- seven percent of our consumers agreed that "department stores seem to have had their day" (3.0/90%). Whereas fifty-two percent agreed that "department stores do continue to have higher quality items than discount stores, especially clothing" (3.5/93%).
Almost as many panelists agree that "discount stores are improving and have a better image" (3.5/88%). Indeed, eighteen percent say they have switched their major ...
