PT Kabelmetal Indonesia (KI) obtained its licence for operating under the PMA (Foreign Investment) Scheme in 1970. The company was set up by three West German investors and two domestic companies, namely PT Gajah Tunggal Mulia and PT Fortius. Later the company's share ownership underwent changes. The shares of the foreign shareholders, which originally amounted to 51% of the company's stock, dropped to only 7.4%, after transfers of shares to PT Gajah Tunggal of the Gajah Tunggal Group, which is run by businessman Sjamsul Nursalim.
