Tuna and skipjack are commodities with good market potentials, especially in the export market. Indonesia's fish production has been continuously increasing at significant rates. In 1985, for example, the production of sea fish and Fresh war fish reached 2,396 thousand tons, and this figure rose by 5.5% to 2,530 thousand tons in 1986.

The following year, Indonesia's fish production increased quite substantially. In 1989, it reached 3,026 thousand tons, up 4.9% from the previous year's level of 2,882 thousand tons.
