Domestic demand for printing inks is growing faster than rate of growth of Japan's GNP, indicating the expanding range of applications and demand for printed methods of communication. This growing demand has increased sales of printing ink of all types from 150,000 tonnes (kt) in 1981 to 255kt in 1990, an estimated 260kt in 1991, and could exceed 300kt in the near future. Sales (shipments) of the various categories are shown in Table 1.
World consumption of printing ink is estimated to be 1.8 million tonnes; the USA accounting for about 40%, Japan 17% and West Germany 10%. On a per capita basis, the USA, Japan and Germany consume about 3kg annually, Canada about ...
