Mircea Elaide, RIP MIRCEA ELIADE's rich, exuberant life ended in spring-time, as it had begun 79 years earlier. The campus of the University of Chicago was in bloom, and he had been teaching, writing, tutoring to the end. The novelist and historian of religion, philosopher and playwright, born and educated in Rumania, was among the world's most esteemed intellectuals, and among the gentlest, warmest human beings. A class with Professor Eliade was an experience in breath-takingly encyclopedic scholarship.
Having written an entire library of fiction and non-fiction even before he left Rumania forever (in 1940), his output was prodigious. Among his best-known works ...
