In the first year following the normalization in August 1990 of Indonesia-China diplomatic ties, the bilateral trade between the two countries again posted a deficit for Indonesia.

After a surplus for three consecutive years (1988-1990), the Indonesia-China bilateral trade is estimated to have produced a deficit for Indonesia to repeat what happened in 1987. The indication for this 1991 deficit is that the actual value of Indonesia's imports from China for the period of January-October 1991 was already higher than that of its exports to the country for the same period.
