Butane-Derived MTBE Can Fill The Octane Gap
THE CURRENT lead phasedown program in the United States has reduced the maximum lead content of leaded gasoline to 0.1 gram per base gallon. Although the lead limit dropped from 0.5 to 0.1 gram per gallon on Jan. 1, 1986, refiners can use lead credits accumulated during 1985 to postpone the reduction. However, lead credits run out on Jan. 1, 1988, and the maximum lead content of leaded gasoline will become 0.1 gram per gallon.
By 1990, a 0.1 gram per gallon lead limit coupled with a rapidly declining market for leaded gasoline will make lead removal from U.S. gasoline essentially complete.
