Summary:
Nuclear safety experts from 13 countries meeting in Vienna (April 6 to 10) concluded that urgent action was needed at an international level to define and carry out safety measures at all RBMK reactor sites in the former Soviet Union. On April 13, a third reactor at Chernobyl was closed down and on April 20, Russia ordered the closure of two military reactors at Krasnoyarsk in Siberia.
The IAEA meeting came two weeks after the emergency shutdown of the Leningradskaya nuclear plant at Sosnovy-Bor on March 24. The experts identified a clear need for a comprehensive safety review of the 15 RBMK reactors in operation in Lithuania, the Russian Federation ...
