In contrast to the slowdown of the domestic industry of slowing machines, imports of such machines have increased significantly over the same period. In 1987, Indonesia imported a total of 33,238 sewing machines of different types which comprise sewing machines for household use, automatic sewing machines for industrial use, and other types of automatic sewing machines. In the following, the imports of sewing machines continued to rise both in volume and in value. In 1990, they reached a total of 100,116 units worth US$ 15.4 million.
