Article: BUTON ASPHALT EXPLOITED AGAIN

The production of asphalt from Buton Island in Southeast Sulawesi was discontinued in 1988 because the Department of Public Works saw Buton asphalt as having inadequate quality and the cost for transporting it as very high. Pertamina then tried to meet the domestic demand for asphalt with the asphalt produced from its oil refinery plants. In 1990, however, the production of Buton asphalt resumed. For the same year, the production figure reached 40,289 tons. For 1991, the production of Buton asphalt reached 202,542 tons, which was 1.3% higher than the original target of 200,000 tons.
