Gospel music rolls out of the church, onto the charts
Gospel--an American music form whose roots are older than the Republic and that has influenced everyone from evangelist Jimmy Swaggart to the rock band Foreigner--is on the march.
Not since the Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey, the "father of gospel," wrote "Precious Lord Take My Hand" in 1932 has gospel music been so visible and influential. It now outsells jazz and classical. Christian contemporary musicians, gospel singers and rock bands are bringing its sound, message and style out of the church and into the mainstream of popular music.
