The consumption of biscuits in Indonesia has shown the tendency to continue increasing, notwithstanding the 1989 issue of sodium nitrite contamination, which resulted in the drop of sales by 50% for several months. The exact figures on domestic biscuit consumption are difficult to find out because there are many small-scale biscuit producers which are not registered with the Department of Industry.
