BAKERSFIELD -- California's foremost oil community and surrounding Kern County are certainly not Houston, Midland or any of the other energy capitals that are being staggered by the industry's economic trials.
But California's premier oil patch and the city that mostly supports it are hurting -- even as the rest of the state enjoys a booming economy. The new push here, as elsewhere in oil country, is diversification.
