Iraq Strikes at Key Iranian Oil Terminal on Sirri Island

BAHRAIN -- Iraq jets launched a missile attack on Iran's makeshift Sirri Island oil terminal in the Southern Gulf, leaving two tankers ablaze, shipping sources in the region said.

This was the first reported attack on Sirri, about 100 miles west of the Strait of Hormuz at the Entrance to the Gulf.

The shipping sources said the missile attack was launched by two Iraqi jets at about 0730 GMT Tuesday, with the planes sweeping low over the island and hitting the tankers, which were moored about one mile offshore. They said a third tanker was possibly hit in addition to the two left ablaze.
