The Western Desert, with an area of about 450,000 sq km, is likely to become a major producer of gas. The oilfields discovered so far are small. The main producing ventures there are the following:
- Khalda Petroleum Co.(KPC), a JV between EGPC (50%), and the US companies Conoco and Texas International. This is the biggest oil producer in the region, with a total output averaging around 30,000 b/d out of five fields: Salam, Khalda, Hayat, Safir and Tut. Since 1987, KPC (not to be confused with Kuwait's KPC) has made several oil and gas discoveries.
