Article: New contaminated sites list for France

A new list of 450 contaminated sites has been drawn up by the French Ministry of the Environment. It comprises sites already listed in 1978 and 1986 (see HAZNEWS, February 1990, p. 9; January 1989, pp. 23-24). By September 1992, 92 sites had been declared cleaned up and 106 were undergoing remedial work, according to the Ministry. At present, the regions carrying out the most clean-ups are Haute-Normandie (15) and Ile de France (13), in northern France, and Aquitaine (12), in south-west France. Nord-Pas de Calais, northern France, has the largest number of listed sites (88), of which 83 still need cleaning up.
