FIRST SIGHTINGS
FOR MANY YEARS the incomparable Russell Kirk wrote a regular column in NATIONAL REVIEW entitled "From the Academy." NR indeed began, in its original inspiration, in the academy. God and Man at Yale appeared in 1951, launching a combat of ideas and world views.
Russell Kirk's column dealt with many things, but its principal focus was the decline of genuine learning and genuine scholarship. The problem of the academy today remains the same, but it is also different and much darker. Hence this rebirth of an NR column about the American academy.
