I was influenced by The Art of the Long View. It's a book about strategic planning, by Peter Schwartz. The thesis is that nobody is smart enough to know what's gonna happen in the future, but everyone runs their business as if they were. Therefore, it makes sense to develop alternate scenarios and think about what you would do in each case.
How could you predict what happened to us? We had a great year in 1992. In the recession, we had record earnings and good growth.
