Summary:
The Ukrainian Parliament voted on October 21, with the support of President Leonid Kravchuk, to continue operating the Chernobyl nuclear plant, much to the dismay of the international community, which had hoped to see the plant, site of the worst nuclear accident in history, shut down permanently. A three -point Parliamentary Resolution states that the Chernobyl plant will remain open as long as its technical capabilities permit; that a moratorium on construction of new plants is cancelled; and that in late 1993, three new units will come on line at Rovno, Khmielnetsky and Zaporozhie.
