BOSTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's largest animal protection organization is battling a proposal being considered tonight by the Gardner City Council that would allow hunters to open fire on up to 100 Canada Geese who have taken up residence at a Gardner reservoir.

In a letter sent to city council members today, Walter Kilroy, executive vice president of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA), said the proposed hunt would cause "unnecessary suffering" for the geese and other animals that inhabit Crystal Lake, as well as Perley Brook and Cowee Pond.
