The Austrian remedial services firm, ABW mbH (Abbruch-, Boden- und Wasserreinigungsges. mbH), started operating Austria's first fixed-base contaminated materials washing plant at the end of 1993, near Vienna. The plant cost Sch150 million ($11.9 million), and has an annual capacity of 40 -130,000 tonnes. In Austria, some 650,000 tonnes of hazardous wastes are generated each year, of which about one-third are contaminated soil and solid materials suitable for washing. The plant can treat contaminated soil, construction rubble and other mineral-containing hazardous wastes, as well as waste waters.
