Methods of producing ceramic membranes for separation processes are being investigated by researchers in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Cincinnati, USA.
The workers, led by Professor Jerry Lin, are examining the use of sol-gel techniques to produce molecular sieves and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) to synthesize composite membranes for gas separation. The work is funded by the National Science Foundation and Amoco.
The sol-gel route produces membranes with very uniform pore sizes which helps them perform consistently under extreme conditions.
