Stayover tourist arrivals to the Caribbean in 1993 increased by an estimated 8% in 1993 (compared with a 2.9% increase in 1992), while cruise passenger arrivals remained at around 1992 levels, well below the growth rate of previous years, says the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). (See detailed statistics later in this issue):
The region received some 22 million visitors, comprising 13.1 million stay -over, and nearly 9 million cruise passenger visitors, says Arley Sobers, CTO's director of statistics and research, who adds that the visitors spent an estimated $10 billion in the region during 1993;
