Measles on the Rebound

Measles is still with us. Unfortunately, reports of its demise, as Mark Twain once said of his own prematurely announced death, were "greatly exaggerated."

Supposedly on the verge of extinction in the United States in 1983, when only 1,497 cases originating in the country were reported, measles (rubeola) rebounded to a total of 2,813 in 1985. As of the beginning of May, this year a total of 1,976 Americans--more than in all of 1983--had been afflicted. The nation's worst outbreak in three years started in Jersey City, N.J., in November 1985 and ravaged the surrounding area for over six months.
