One of the most important developments within the field of mass spectrometry over the past several years has been the commercial emergence of MS/MS. Just as a mass spectrometer can be combined with a GC to form a GC/MS, or with a high-performance liquid chromatograph to create an LC/MS, an MS can also be hyphenated with another mass spec to produce an MS/MS system. Like the GC fronting the MS, the MS/MS system first performs a "separation," selecting "parent" ions to be analyzed either at the back end of the system or, in the case of ion-trap MS, later in time.
