In early June, President Carlos Salinas de Gortari's administration announced steps designed to expedite negotiations on bilateral free trade agreements with Guatemala and Nicaragua. In the case of Nicaragua, Mexico held the first in a series of three consultations scheduled for this month on the steps needed to proceed on full negotiations. With Guatemala, Mexico renewed a temporary agreement on duty- free imports of Guatemalan products, thus reiterating a commitment to negotiate a full accord.
Mexico is also negotiating bilateral accords with El Salvador and Honduras as part of an overall strategy to complete free trade agreements with Central America. In fact, a ...
