Impact of Government Regulation No. 20/1994
Recently the Government has taken a series of deregulatory measures concerning investments through Government Regulation No. 20/1994. One of the provisions in the new government regulation declares that the mass media sector, including television broadcasting, is open to foreign investments.
The new regulation raised a controversy, as it is considered against Law No. 21/1992 on the Basic Principles of the Press, which is intended to protect the domestic press from foreign intervention through foreign investments on the ground that the domestic press serves as an instrument for preserving the nation's interests. ...
