Total expenditure on safety and environmental protection at F. Hoffmann-La Roche, the Swiss-based multinational pharmaceuticals group, totalled SwF542 million ($367 million) for the year ended 31st December, 1993, up 4.2% on 1992. This represented 3.8% of sales. Environmental capital costs totalled SwF153 million, unchanged from the previous year, as most of the major end-of -pipe pollution abatement systems for existing production facilities were already in place, according to the group's annual and environmental reports (see HAZNEWS, December 1993, pp. 4-5).
