In late September, Pemex-Exploracion--a subsidiary of the state-run oil company PEMEX--opened bids to domestic and international companies to drill nine new wells in the Campeche Sound. According to a PEMEX official, the drilling of the new wells is an attempt to boost Mexico's proven oil reserves beyond the current 64.5 billion barrels.
The concessions for the drilling of the new wells will be awarded in two packages to domestic and foreign companies or domestic-foreign partnerships. One package involves drilling five wells 4,900 meters deep. Concessions for the remaining four wells, each up to 5,050 meters in depth, will be offered in the second package.
