In late November, Nicaragua and Mexico announced that negotiations on a free -trade agreement have been postponed until next year, pending the appointment of president-elect Ernesto Zedillo's cabinet, including a Trade Secretary. Zedillo is scheduled to take office on Dec. 1.
Presidents Carlos Salinas de Gortari of Mexico and Violeta Chamorro of Nicaragua had originally targeted enactment of a free trade agreement between the two countries for Jan. 1, 1995, but disagreements over agricultural trade and other issues have delayed completion of an accord, which the two countries started to negotiate in 1991.
