DSHEA amends the FDCA by adding a new definition for dietary supplements. This is significant because the definition determines whether a product is subject to the special safety standards and labeling provisions of DSHEA. Under this new provision, dietary supplements are still considered food as before; however, to be considered a dietary supplement, the product must bear or contain one or more of several dietary ingredients including vitamins, minerals, herbs or amino acids.
