Summary: A hybrid bicycle that combines human strength with an electric motor is proving extremely popular among the Japanese. After it went on sale in the Autumn of 1993, no fewer than 8,000 of these unique bicycles, which use an electric motor attached to an ordinary bicycle to supplement human pedalling power, were sold in just two months, according to a report in the Japanese Mission to the EC's "News & Views from Japan" bulletin. Production has not been able to keep up with demand and since the unexpected popularity of the hybrid bicycle seems likely to continue, new manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon and sales can be expected to accelerate.
