Summary: Demand for solid fuels in the European Union in 1993 fell by 9.6%, while coal production fell back by another 26 million tonnes to 158.6 million tonnes. For 1994 as a whole, domestic EU deliveries of hard coal are likely to fall by another 17 million tonnes to reach an all-time low, according to a recently-published update by the European Commission of its annual report on "The market for solid fuels in the Community in 1993 and the outlook for 1994" which gave the forecasts made at the end of 1993 and in January 1994.
