The American Embassy-Managua on November 21 provided an overview of the telecommunications industry in Nicaragua, details of which follow:
* Summary: Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America (population about 4 million) has only 72,000 lines for the entire country, 50% of which are located in the capital, Managua. Only 2 lines per 100 inhabitants are available, compared with 11 lines per 100 in Costa Rica, and 55 per 100 in the U.S. Clearly, the potential for expansion in the telecommunications sector is enormous.
