Summary: A European Commission Green Paper, released on April 4 in Strasbourg, has succeeded in relaunching the debate about the EU's role in the tourist industry. Tourist activities account for 5.5% of the European Union's GDP (twice that figure in some Member States) and provides work for roughly nine million people. Back in July 1992, the Eu Council of Ministers decided to develop a three year action plan in favour of tourism and endow it with a budget of ECU 17 million to be shared among a lengthy list of project ranging from the staggering of holiday periods to the promotion of tourism in the EU, via training and cultural tourism.
