Article: FIBRES AND YARNS - Cheaper polyesters offered for compostable products

Low-cost compostable polyesters that should be suitable for use in disposable products such as diapers, for which they exhibit adequate strength and toughness properties, have been developed in the USA by E.I. Du Pont de Nemours of Wilmington, Delaware.

The polyesters (described in US patent 5 295 985) are based on polyester ingredients such as polyethylene terephthalate, which are copolymerised with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal 4-sulphophthalic acid derivative, while other ingredients might be polyethylene ether glycols and/or non -aromatic diacids such as adipic or glutaric acid.
