SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A monoclonal antibody-based immunotoxin developed by scientists at XOMA Corporation may be effective in treating graft versus host disease (GvHD), a serious complication of bone marrow transplantation, it was announced today. Bone marrow transplantation is a procedure used in treating certain advanced cancers and genetic blood disorders.
Currently, as many as half of all patients receiving conventional bone marrow transplants experience GvHD. The risk of patients developing GvHD is viewed as a major barrier to more widespread use of conventional bone marrow transplantation.
