Summary: The European Parliament proposed a compromise on the draft Directive (COM(94)323) on lorry tachometers in Strasbourg on July 13. The urgent need for such a Directive was tragically demonstrated by the crash of a Spanish tourist coach near Avignon in southern France on July 9, in which 22 people were killed. An investigation revealed that the vehicle's two drivers had violated EU rules on driving time and had tampered with the tachometer meant to ensure they were respected.
