Furniture stores nationwide are finding big money in what clearly is an under-the-table business: the sale of area rugs.
Once perceived as merely a design accent in vignettes showcasing sofas, chairs and tables, area rugs are proving to be a viable category in their own right. Furniture stores with whom Flooring spoke report increased sales and commitment for area rugs.
They note these high-margin products are a strong impulse buy when coordinated effectively in a room setting. And by expanding their assortments, consumers see they are a serious player in the category, resulting in solid sales gains.
