Summary: Under the effects of the Clean Air Act which, following successful large-scale experiments, came into force in November 1992, requiring changes in fuel profiles in the fight against car engine pollution, the United States has made great strides in the use of bioethanol in petrol. The same cannot be said for Europe, however. Now the European ethanol industry has spoken out against the apparently paradoxical foot-dragging on the part of the EU authorities when it comes to biofuels.
