It may be possible to create potential novel biomaterials without significantly altering the properties of the original biomaterial, argue scientists in their report on the modification of polyethylene terephthalate ('Dacron').
Thrombosis of Dacron prosthetic vascular grafts is still the major complication of arterial reconstruction. Incidences of failure vary greatly depending on graft length and internal diameter, as well as anatomic position. Acute graft thrombosis occurs in 2% of all large diameter, high flow grafts and in 20% of all distal bypasses, says the US research team.
