An onshore oilfield, Sidi El Itayem was discovered in 1971 by CFP/Total's Compagnie Franco-Tunisienne des Petroles (CFTP). This is a small structure in a Triassic reservoir 7,500-7,800 feet deep.

The field is near Sfax and came on stream in 1972, and the block called Sfax-Kerkennah is a partly onshore and partly offshore area first won by Total in 1968. In 1986, Total drilled additional wells in the northern part of the field's reservoir, where there was need for a greater density of holes.

Output at Sidi El Itayem peaked at 8,000 b/d of 44x API oil in 1977 but fell to less than 2,500 b/d in 1984. A gaslift system installed in the late 1980s enabled production ...
