This refinery, built in 1962 by Snamprogetti of Italy, is operated by Societe Tunisienne des Industries de Raffinage (STIR). In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the refinery has been operating at more than its 34,000 b/d capacity. Throughput at present is 30,000 b/d and net output is 27,000 b/d.
Products refined at Bizerte include gasoline, gas oil, fuel oil, LPG, naphtha, natural gasoline, and paraffin. LPG is also produced at the Gabes gas processing plant. At present, the refinery produces far less than what is consumed locally. Oil consumption rose over 12% to 75,000 b/d in 1995, up from 66,000 b/d in 1994.
